EXCLUSIVE FROM NEW YORK | National Security on High Alert: U.S. Dismantles Telecom Network Capable of Sabotage During UN General Assembly

The United States Secret Service announced Tuesday that it had dismantled an electronic device network in New York used to threaten senior government officials and capable of disrupting telecommunications during the High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly.

“The potential disruption to our nation’s telecommunications posed by this network of devices is undeniable,” said Secret Service Director Sean Curran in an official statement.

An intelligence-led investigation uncovered more than 300 servers and 100,000 SIM cards operating less than 35 miles from the UN General Assembly venue.

Telecom Threats Targeting U.S. Officials at the UN

“These devices were used to carry out multiple telecom-related threats directed at senior officials of the U.S. government,” the agency stated.

The network also had the capacity to execute a wide range of telecom attacks, including disabling mobile phone towers, the statement added.

Given the timing, location, and potential impact on New York’s telecommunications infrastructure, the Secret Service opted to immediately dismantle the network.

 Preventive Mission and Swift Action

“The Secret Service’s protective mission is rooted in prevention, and this investigation sends a clear message to malicious actors: imminent threats to our protectees will be investigated, located, and dismantled without delay,” Curran emphasized.
